You probably already know that fibre helps with digestion. Did you know it can have big benefits for your heart health too?

“Studies have shown that foods that have a lot of fibre are clearly associated with lower risk of heart disease,” says Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, American Heart Association spokeswoman and director of the cardiovascular nutrition research program at Tufts University’s Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging.

Dietary fibre, which can be found in vegetables, fruit, lentils and pulses, plays a vital role in reducing our risk of heart disease and other diet-related illnesses such as colorectal cancer which is the Number 1 Cancer in Singapore. In particular, soluble fibre, such as that found in oats, has a protective effect on the heart as it helps to reduce the amount of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in the blood.

To maintain good health, we should eat 20-35 g of fibre daily. Good sources of fibre include:

  • fruit, especially guava, jackfruit and banana
  • brown rice
  • vegetables, especially leafy and root vegetables
  • wholemeal products (for instance, wholemeal and multi-grain bread)
  • lentils and pulses (for instance, kidney beans, chick peas, red beans).

Apples are the perfect fruit for diabetics. They’re low-GI, available throughout the year and a great snack to pack for work or school, as they don’t bruise easily. Apples are high in pectin, a soluble fibre which helps to lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels and bowel function, and also has an anti-inflammatory affect which may help diabetics to recover from infections faster.

Apples are also rich in immune-boosting antioxidants, justifying the old adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples are especially rich in quercetin (a strong antioxidant found in high concentrations in apple skins) which is associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, may help prevent heart attacks, reduce the risk of cancer and ward off eye disease.

For Diabetics eating fruits

1. Eat Fruit Slowly and in small portions – smaller apples are good for this.

2. Eat the apple with the skin, as the skin contains complex carbohydrates and phytonutrients as well as a lot of additional fiber

3. Only eat fresh apples, not dried or canned ones which may have additional sugar added.

4. If you are eating an apple, do so before a meal, and therefore reduce the amount of carbohydrates you intend to take during the meal.

Diabetes is a serious chronic illness that is affecting a large portion of our population. Many Singaporeans are at risk, as we reduce the number of hours we are active, and increase the number of hours of inactivity (as we spend more time at work, and at rest), our dietary habits have also become less healthy, eating out is more prevalent, and often most do not go for healthy options.

Many believe that if they have Diabetes, they cannot consume fruits – that incorrect. There are fruits which diabetics can consume safely if done correctly.

Having fruits gives the body much needed antioxidants to fight damage to cells via Oxidation, inflammation and a whole host of other reasons including stress etc. Hence despite having Diabetes, you still should consume fruits, but be aware of the glycaemic index of foods – a measure of the effects of carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruit on blood sugar levels.  This is an important consideration especially as fruits are often eaten on their own.

I am not saying that we have to do the same in Singapore. But having Fresh Fruits as  Snacks in the office  helps us stay healthy by having good alternatives to Potato Chips, Chocolates,  Keropok, Curry Puff & probably other unhealthy fried stuff as snacks.

Diabetes and Fruits

Korean StrawberriesIn Singapore, one out of 9 people aged 18 to 69 has diabetes. That’s about 11.3% of our population or more than 400,000 people!

Diabetes is the fifth most common medical condition diagnosed and one of the six top killer diseases in the country.

Diabetes is a chronic disease and, if not managed well, can deteriorate steadily to cause devastating complications such as blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, heart disease and limb amputation. Studies show that about half of patients already have diabetes-related complications at the time of diagnosis.

But slowly and surely according to the Health Promotion Board, very soon 1 in 5 people will suffer from Diabetes.

The diet of a Diabetes afflicted individual has to be carefully monitored to avoid spikes in the blood sugar level or commonly known as Hyperglycemia.

Strawberries (and other berries) are one of the fruits suitable for Diabetics.

(GI: 40; GL per punnet of 250g: 4)

Nothing beats a bowl of strawberries as a sweet treat. With one punnet of strawberries the equivalent of one fruit portion (250g) you are good to go. Strawberries (and all other berries such as blackberries, raspberries, young berries and gooseberries) have a low glycaemic index (low-GI) and a low glycaemic load (low-GL) per typical serving; this means eating them will help you to stay full for longer, your blood sugar levels will remain steady and, subsequently, your energy levels will be sustained for longer.

Berries are full of antioxidants which boost your immune system by neutralising harmful by-products of metabolism called “free radicals” that can lead to cancer and other diseases. The antioxidants in berries are also good for your eye sight as they prevent eye damage and offer protection against retinal degeneration (particularly diabetic retinopathy and diabetic cataracts).

Enjoy the berries on their own – if you would like to add some dairy for dessert; rather opt for plain low-fat yoghurt than cream or ice-cream.
